Here we go again, again

Man, this year is really sucking. Max's eye has been leaking for the last week or so - no bursts, just leaking. The thing is, it has also been leaking some blood and last week one night it must have been a lot from the looks of the stains on my comforter. (Good thing it's old and needs to be replaced anyway.)

Today, I stopped at home briefly (I thought) to pick up my rainjacket before going to text study. As soon as I got upstairs I knew there was a problem. Blood splatters were all over the floor. I followed them through my hallway, saw no Max in the living room. Went upstairs to find more blood splattered in the hallway upstairs. Still no sign of Max on the bed, behind the bed, under any furniture, on the couch - finally found him downstairs in Moses' old basket in the corner. His eye was all squished in and he was obviously in pain. Needless to say I skipped text study and am now sitting with Max curled up on my lap under the blanket so he feels safe and sheltered. I do have to go back to church for a couple of meetings later this afternoon and evening, so hopefully he'll be ok while I'm gone.

I just lost Moses less than 2 months ago. I don't think I'm ready to let go of Max yet, but may have to make that decision soon from the looks of things right now. He recovered well from all those eye bursts a year and a half ago, but this time it's blood not just fluid. And I do have to wonder how long it will last this time and how much I want him to suffer - plus how much I can be around for him when he needs me.

Day after tomorrow we're supposed to leave for home in the Beast. My plan to take the Beast was so I wouldn't have to leave him here by himself to get lonely. Now I'll be wanting to keep a close eye on him too, but have to wonder what effect the jostling of the RV will have on his eye. Guess I'll see what tomorrow and the next day will bring - whether we leave for home Thursday or if it's delayed.... or what may be next. Poor thing.

Man, this year is really sucking.

One of those nagging questions

Today I got an answer to one of the mysterious questions of life that never seems to go away: can communion wafers get stale? After all, they're pretty much like cardboard anyway.

Well, this morning for the first time in many years, our communion bread didn't show up for worship. We keep wafers on hand for just that thing, because it used to happen much more frequently. I also use them for my shut-in visits. At the early service, our wafers were from a ziploc baggie and they were about like expected. But the second service we had fresh ones from a newly opened package. Snap! Yes, it is possible! These were much fresher.

Best part of the service today was watching the reactions as people realized they were getting wafers instead of bread. Priceless....

(I still plan to share some of Dad's stories, but it has been quite busy lately. I will try to get them on this week sometime though.)
